what online classes require

This link from http://www.ion.illinois.edu/Resources/tutorials/pedagogy/StudentProfile.asp offers an insite into the type of student or the general type of characteriestics a student needs to complete online classes. This week's discussion has me wondering if the completion rate for online classes differs from traditional face to face classes. I think I may do a bit of research on that.

I think online classes require a great deal of dedication, self-motivation, organization, and independence. These are the same qualities, in my opinion, that you need in FTF classes also. The biggest difference for me is the flexibility that distance learning offers. What do you think?

well I might disagree with part of your comment. I think an online class requires more motivation than the FTF classroom due to slightly different expectations. In the FTF classroom, roll is often taken and sometimes even counted towards the overall grade. Some people need this structural expectation so they will complete their classes. For others, the flexibility of the online class makes it harder because they are always putting things off to another time.

I agree that online classes require a lot of motivation, organization and independence. It does help students improve their work either word processing or researching an article Also, the computer help build students' knowledge more quickly and just depends on how the students using that information hopefully for the good.

Online classes do require a certain type of student. Our students are required to complete a Plato program on courses they failed and last year our asst. principal was staying after school with them until 11:00 pm to help them get it done in time to graduate. Mainly because they procrastinated.
